“We are, all of us, creatures of habit”. Edgar Rice Burroughs
According to James Clear, in the Atomic Habits book, success is a result of the daily habits, and not once-in-a-lifetime situations. And let’s be honest here: keeping your home clean with dogs and kids, is a pretty amazing success! Inconceivable for most people.
At Make it Clean, we have years of experience on house cleaning in Brisbane, but we also honestly want to make your life easier – even when it doesn’t involve us.
That’s why we selected 3 habits to keep your home clean and organized, so you will have more time to spend with your family, friends, reading, Netflix, planning to conquer the world or whatever you want to do.
On the book, one of the most important aspects for changing or creating habits is priming the environment. By that, he means we need to create the perfect environment to stimulate the result, making it easier for the task to be completed, and hard to be avoided.
So, for example, if you want to eat healthier, it is important to leave the “good” snacks at the most visible place in your kitchen, and the “bad” snacks (the ones that taste good and for some reason we should not eat) hidden somewhere.
We’ll use the Four Laws of Behavior Change from his book as framework to try to change our habits and luckily the behavior of our family:
- Make it Obvious
- Make it Attractive
- Make it Easy
- Make it Satisfying
With the help of these laws, we’ll try to break down the steps to our quest.
A clean and hygienic toilet seat and bowl is a very good way for us to start – and boy, how hard it is to keep it beautiful!
Leaving magazines or a mobile charger close to the toilet could be a good idea, especially if we can leave them in a position that when you put them back, you will stare at the brush and cleaning wipes.
This already covers the make it obvious, attractive and easy part.
Choosing a cleaning wipe with a good smell helps with the satisfaction part, but regarding other people, you should thank them. It makes wonders to thank people when they do what you expect rather than criticizing them when they do not.
This one goes either for office or study. The main goal here is to get rid of the rubbish.
How can we make it obvious and attractive? The best image that pops into my mind is to put a small basketball hoop on top of the bin.
It will draw attention to the bin, and linking the habit with the game will also make it attractive.
Maybe it is not so easy according to your actual sporting prowess, but when you get it right, it is definitely satisfying!
You could also attach other habits to it, maybe cleaning something for every 3 misses.
For this one, we’ll mix and twist the 4 laws, so we make it easy, obvious and attractive to put the dirty clothes in the basket, and unpleasant to forget it.
The first step to make it easy and obvious, is to put baskets in all bathrooms or bedrooms (or both if you are willing to hunt them all every week).
It helps to turn the habit more attractive if you use a funny basket like these:
Those are the carrots. The stick is when you don’t take or wash any clothes that are not inside the basket. After a while with no clean clothes, people will start to use them.
